Perceptions of beauty are a matter of individual taste, which is cultivated by regional culture, influenced by fashion trends, and manipulated by institutions. Fine art opens the artist to the philosophical view of “aesthetics”, which is the study of beauty in nature and art. I have been exploring the idea of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. My cumulative life experiences and ongoing health issues have helped me to see beauty in flawed situations. My art is therefore a form of affirmation of the powers of imperfection and impermanence. I am excited to both find and create beauty in everyday life. In my art practice, I am trying to expand my appreciation of beauty through a process of “destruction/ construction, ”which consists of damaging and abusing materials until beauty emerges in their imperfect condition.
